Summer of Fire

Well, we are already approaching the 4th of July! I hope the summer is treating you well! During the summer months, it is hot, sometimes scorching, the sun is out in full force, everything is in bloom, and people are outside gettin their active on!

In TCM we refer to the summer season as the time of the FIRE element. As you remember, there are 5 elements, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire. This time of year is considered the most YANG. Winter would be the most YIN.Fire is expansive, it rises (just like actual fire), it spreads rapidly, it can start internal fires so to speak, it is active, masculine, explosive (think of a volcano), quick, rapid, boiling, dry, etc.

I love the warmth but sometimes it does get a tad too hot even for me. This extreme heat can lead to irritability in some which can then leave you feeling tired and run down.

One of the most functional and simple things we can do to combat the effects of the environment on us to is use food as therapy. The cool thing about TCM and other modalities is that they truly view food as carrying vital energy.

One easy way to distinguish an energy-rich, vital food from a not so vital food is simple, ask yourself one question, is it in a package? Most foods in packages that contain a plethora of ingredients (which most you can't even pronounce) are void of any life force, energy, vitality, essential nutrients.

According to TCM theory, all foods have different tastes, sour, sweet, pungent, bitter, and salty. It is important to eat a balance of all the tastes. Foods are also either hot or cold, warm or cool. Depending on your personal constitution and the environmental factors that surround you, you can use foods to promote more balance.

During the summer months, it makes sense to eat more cooling foods, to soothe the fire. However, at the same time, it is not advised to just eat cold and cool foods, it's all about balance. By eating too many cold and cool foods, you can actually produce dampness in the body which can then lead to heat, specifically damp-heat, especially if you live in humid and hot climates such as the southeast or the like.

MOst foods that are cooling, that will essentially balance the Yin and Yang within you are foods that are naturally in season right now!

Cooling Produce-
-asparagus
-watermelon
-cucumber
-celery
-berries
-avocado
-fennel
-figs
-lettuce
-green beans
-summer squash
-mint

Cooling grains include-
-barley
-millet
-amaranth

Cooling protein sources-
-almonds (soaked preferably)
-beans (such as mung, great northern, etc)
-yogurt (Organic Raw if possible)
-Fish (they come from the ocean which is very YIN in nature- dark, cold, wet)

Cooling Sea Vegetables-
-dulce
-kombu
-nori

Sea Vegetables are very great for cooling you off during the summer, they live at the bottom of the sea which is cool, calm and quiet to balance out summer's dry, blazing heat.

Dr. Masaru Emoto's Healing Prayer for the Gulf

Focusing our energies in response to the Gulf tragedy and for healing the waters and its inhabitants -

Yesterday at our spiritual center we read a letter from Dr. Masaru Emoto who many of you will recognize as the scientist from Japan who has done all the research and publications about the characteristics of water. Among other things, his research reveals that water physically responds to emotions.
Right now, most of us have the predominantly angry emotion when we consider what is happening in the Gulf. And while certainly we are justified in that emotion, we may be of greater assistance to our planet and its life forms, if we sincerely, powerfully and humbly pray the prayer that Dr Emoto, himself, has proposed.


"I send the energy of love and gratitude to the water and all the living creatures in the Gulf of Mexico and its surroundings.
To the whales, dolphins, pelicans, fish, shellfish, plankton, coral, algae, and all living creatures . . .
I am sorry.
Please forgive me.

We are passing this request to people who we believe might be willing to participate in this prayer, to set an intention of love and healing that is so large, so overwhelming that we can perform a miracle in the Gulf of Mexico.

We are not powerless. We are powerful. Our united energy, speaking this prayer daily...multiple times daily....can literally shift the balance of destruction that is happening.

We don't have to know how......we just have to recognize that the power of love is greater than any power active in the Universe today.

Bye Bye Sky



Well, today my little Sky passed away. He lived a short but a very happy and loving life. He was diagnosed with cancer last summer and made it this far. He was one of the most special beings I have ever met in my life. Talk about a little sweetheart. His little paws looked like Ugg boots. It's pretty amazing how our animals earn such deep spaces in our hearts. I will always be reminded of his kind soul each and everytime I look at the sky.
I believe that animals are here not only to provide love and companionship to us but also teach us lessons and show us what it is like to simply live in the moment and live a life full of unconditional love. They go through life with no judgement, no hatred, no self-consciousness. They are here to love and live and I think that is beautiful. They will love us no matter what. They live everyday as if it was their last...give your animals a hug today if you havent already.

Summertime Baby!

SO one of my favorite things about summer is that you get to take virtually EVERYTHING outside! I am definitely a lover of nature and the great outdoors. If you have never been to Colorado I encourage you to come and check it out. We have an amazing outdoor playground with unlimited options for fun, exciting, and healthy things to do. One of my favorite things to do in life is to train. So why not take your training outside? In the summer months I am found outside more than in the gym. You can do cardio, strength, conditioning, yoga, plyometrics, metabolic circuits, pilates, whateva! Lately I have been doing a lot of trail running or intervals, it's awesome. I get to be outside among the beautiful surroundings and also get a killer booty shaping workout in! I have been recruiting some of my friends to go on these outings with me which is super fun too. In addition to getting a great workout in, you also produce Vitamin D just by being outside in the sunshine which is stellar for optimal health and is a natural mood booster.

Please Pass the Potassium

So we all know that potassium among other minerals are vital to our well-being and contribute to many of our critical bodily processes. It is after all the third most abundant mineral in the human body. Potassium works in synergy with other minerals to regulate blood pressure, prevent stroke, reduce anxiety, improve sleep, reduce muscle cramping, improve nerve function, and so many other amazing things!

I think we grow up hearing that bananas are the best source of potassium, "if you have sore calves, eat a banana!" Well, bananas are wonderful, don't get me wrong but there are so many other choices out there and many in fact that have higher levels of potassium.

Here are some alternative options-

* Lima beans (1 cup) 1000 mg
* Cantaloupe (half a 5-inch melon) 975 mg
* Potato (medium-sized) 900 mg
* Almonds (4 oz) 786 mg
* Sweet Potato (Medium-sized) 694mg
* Whole milk (1 cup) 675 mg
* Blackstrap Molasses (1 tbsp) 498 mg
* Halibut (3 oz) 490 mg
* Salmon (4 oz) 470 mg
* Chicken (4 oz) 410 mg

Bananas clock in at 422 for a medium size fruit. As you can see there are other ways to get potassium in your diet. All minerals are important and work together as a team so to ensure adequate mineral consumption, just make sure you are eating colorful foods throughout the day!
